MommySlim Shake Ingredients

Microcrystalline Cellulose Selenium Glycinate Complex Biotin Potassium Iodide Phytonadione
Vitamin D3 Magnesium Carbonate Cyanocobalamin

Some ingredients to examine further:

Ferric Orthophosphate: Iron supplement that’s often used as a coating for metal.  It is banned in the European Union as a food additive over health concerns. It can produce toxic effects when swallowed, and it’s known to irritate the eyes, throat, skin, and respiratory tract.

Zinc Sulfate: Zinc additive that in large amounts can cause stomach problems such as nausea and vomiting. It’s also an eye irritant in powdered form.

Thiamin Mononitrate: Vitamin B1 supplement which is used to properly break down carbohydrates. Medline Plus mentions that it’s unknown what will happen with:

larger amounts during pregnancy or breast-feeding.”

Algal Oil: Algae oil that provides DHA, a healthy omega fatty acid. It’s considerably more expensive than fish oil, which provides the same benefits. The Journal of Nutrition released a study which showed:

“(supplementation) should be done under a physician’s supervision”

This was in order to prevent side effects, especially since it has not been thoroughly studied for long term effects.

Artificial Flavors: A synthetic combination of ingredients that are added to help produce a certain flavor or smell.  It can be extracted from common allergens such as soy, dairy, wheat, and GMO corn. Manufacturers aren’t required to list where they derived this ingredient from.

Macronutrients and Calories

Calories 110 Calories From Fat 20 Total Fat 2g, 3% Cholesterol 5mg, 1% Sodium 110mg, 5%
Potassium 190mg, 5% Total Carbohydrate 11g, 4% Dietary Fiber 3g, 12% Sugars 4g Protein 15g, 30%
Vitamin A 35% Vitamin C 40% Calcium 35% Iron 35% Vitamin D 230%
Vitamin E 35% Vitamin K 35% Thiamin 70% Riboflavin 70% Niacin 70%
Vitamin B5 70% Folate  35% Vitamin B12 70% Biotin 35% Pantothenic Acid 35%
Phosphorus 20% Iodine 35% Magnesium 2% Zinc 35% Selenium, 35%
Manganese 35% Chromium 35% Molybdenum 35%

Of the 110 calories provided, 20 of them are fat based. Therefore the total amount of fat equals:

20/110= 0.18 times 100= 18% fat by weight.

This would rank it as almost being high fat, as the FDA lists any food with 20% or more calories from fat as being a mostly fat food.

There’s 4 grams of sugar that come from many different sources:

Fructose: Fruit sugar that when processed is known as a potentially harmful sweetener.  The American Journal of Nutrition mentions there’s no need for this ingredient and that it’s:

poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract”

“consistently show hyperlipidemia”

Hyperlipidemia is a condition where there’s excess fat in the blood.

Glucose Syrup Solids: Sweetener extracted from starchy foods such as corn, therefore it can sometimes also be named Corn Syrup. It has very little nutritional impact and should be limited to reduce body fat.  Live mentions that there’s:

no nutritional benefit”

So keeping the intake of ingredients like this is essential for a healthy body.

Mannitol: A sucrose tasting ingredient that is often used to reduce head trauma. It’s also an effect laxative given to children.  According to

caution (should) be used when administering mannitol to nursing women”

It’s also known to cause heart failure, electrolyte imbalances, and low blood plasma.

Sucralose: This artificial sweetener is not all used by the body. It’s noncaloric and is often found in baked goods due to its long shelf life. The Center for Science in the Public Interest did a study which showed it increased the risk for leukemia in rats. A study by the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health revealed:

reduction in beneficial fecal microflora,”

“numerous adverse effects”

“enhanced expression levels of P-gp”

P-gp is released whenever a potential contaminant enters the body.

Overall, there’s sweeteners added which can have serious health risks, and some of which aren’t thoroughly tested to be safe in pregnant or nursing women. It’s encouraged by health organizations to limit all these ingredients in order to prevent any unwanted side effects.

The Quality of MommySlim Shake’s protein

There are a few forms of protein added which equals to 15 grams:

Calcium Caseinate: Slow digesting protein taken from skim milk.  Certain people can be deathly allergic to this protein.

Sodium Caseinate: Another name for Casein which is a protein found in milk.  According to the FDA, it’s known that this ingredient:

may be injurious to the kidneys”

Live also mentions that it has been:

linked to some human diseases, mainly autism and gastrointestinal problems”

It’s recommended to limit the intake of this ingredient.

Nonfat Milk: A watered down fat less version of milk. According to dairy scientist Bob Roberts from Penn State, nonfat milk is treated in a way which oxidizes cholesterol, and this can lead to:

plaque formation in the arteries and heart disease”

Another study also revealed it could potentially increase the risk for prostate cancer.  Due to the lack of fat found in this milk, it’s not as satiating as full fat milk. This can lead to overdrinking since it’s not as filling.

Soy Protein: Protein taken from defatted soy beans. Soy is one of the most GMO crops in the world, and it’s likely this ingredient is GMO since the label doesn’t state otherwise.  Isoflavones are found in this which according to Penn State studies

increase the risk for cancer”

Also, when given to nursing mothers and children there is:

insufficient evidence on the safety”

There’s potential side effects which may result from taking these ingredients, therefore the quality of protein is lacking even if it’s 15 grams. The company fails to provide the amino acid content as well, which is important for determining the overall quality.

The Price and Quality of MommySlim Shake

A 7 serving box costs $12.95, if taken at 2 a day, this amounts to:

$12.95/3.5= $3.70 for 2 shakes a day.

This is pricy for what you’re getting in return. Also, the benefit of this shake is intended to be for mothers post pregnancies who are nursing. Some of the additives have not been proven to be safe for long term consumption. Therefore, the claim this product is safe for recent mothers aren’t true.

MommySlim Weight Management Plan

On the back of each MommySlim shake packet there’s’ mention that if you’re looking for weight management, that you should use their MommySlim diet plan.

This plan is an offering of many pre made foods which sell for upwards of $178.57 for a 4 weeks supply. This is incredibly expensive for many foods which are processed.

Also, this means that the only way to lose weight is by combining both the shakes and the meals provided by the company.  It’s unknown what benefit there is if any to just using the shakes.

For people looking to lose weight, simply supplementing with shakes is not enough.  This not only increases the overall cost, but there’s no use for MommySlim shakes alone if your goal is to lose weight.

Nursing mothers

The website mentions this important claim:

specifically formulated to meet the unique postnatal nutrition needs”

This is never supported by any evidence. The company lists all the intended benefits without proof. After reviewing some of the ingredients it was shown that there are ingredients which have not been studied for long term.

Some of the additives may actually potentially increase the risk for postnatal harm.

Though it’s mentioned that the opposite is true by the manufactures. It’s still not completely understood since many of the ingredients have not been thoroughly studied. Some of which are only advised to be given in exact quantities by a physician.

By taking these shake packets without any medical supervision, this goes against the intention of many of the ingredients.

Customer Opinions

There are available reviews online; here are some of the most telling from their official website:

“there is almost an acidic, bitter taste”

“it tastes like fish”

i threw all of my packets away”

“this was an expensive mistake”

There were some people who mentioned they liked the amount of vitamins and minerals, which they said would be helpful to their nursing children. However, it’s not been proven to be effective as such, and some of the ingredients may have a negative effect.

Many different things need to be considered about this brand:

  • Some of the ingredients may be harmful to pregnant mothers: Additives such as Sucralose, Mannitol, Soy Protein, and much more have been shown to be potentially damaging. They’ve also not been thoroughly studied for long term in pregnant mothers. There’s concern that taking these ingredients may potentially harm the development of a child, which is exactly the opposite intention of this brand.
  • Many of the sweeteners are potentially damaging: Some of these additives can actually promote weight gain. There are also unnecessary low nutrient additives such as Fructose, Glucose Syrup Solids, and Sucralose may actually increase weight gain. Fructose in particular has been shown to lead to metabolism disorders, and blood sugar increase. These ingredients are simple flavorings that don’t enhance the overall nutrition.
  • The quality of the protein is lacking: The nonfat milk protein is cheap and can be found in many stores. It’s also known to be potentially carcinogenic, leading to things like prostate cancer. Also, the other forms of Casein protein have been shown to be potentially damaging to the kidneys according to the FDA. These ingredients are often processed and though they’re slow acting protein, they aren’t as beneficial as whey protein.
  • The Omega fatty acid source may be potentially harmful: Not enough studies have gone into understanding the potential long term effects of this ingredient. This Algae oil is also much more expensive than its cheaper alternative fish oil. Therefore the overall price might be greatly inflated, and it’s unknown if there’s any benefit to this. Algae oil has also not been studied for pregnant or nursing mothers.
  • The product is expensive: Many processed ingredients are added to this formula, and they’re cheap to produce. Though eating these additives has been shown to be potentially harmful. From the added fillers, cheap fiber sources, less than optimal protein and the lack of long term studies for many of these ingredients, its unknown what kind of impact it might have in the future. There’s included additives which may increase the risk for obesity, and they may potentially cause damage to nursing mothers.

MommySlim doesn’t perform well enough and there’s insufficient studies performed on it. Some of the ingredients may cause problems to pregnant or nursing mothers. Also, people have complained about the fishy taste.
